A well-trained, diverse health workforce remains as one of the biggest challenges in meeting the Millennium Development Goals, achieving an AIDS-Free Generation, supporting family planning goals, and ending preventable child and maternal deaths. The scarcity of health workers in Sub-Saharan Africa highlights the emerging and essential need for educational institutions to stay connected with their graduates.
Since March 2013, CapacityPlus has been collaborating with the Medical Educational Partnership Initiative (MEPI) Coordinating Center, MEPI PI Council, and relevant Technical Working Groups (TWGs) to plan and conduct a set of activities that aim to build the capacity of MEPI-supported schools in three technical areas: graduate tracking, eLearning, and community-based education (CBE). Together with medical professional councils and the MEPI Tracking TWG, MEPI participating institutions identified the need for the development of graduate tracking software to help the schools with tracking their graduates.
MEPI Connect is a free, computerized, open source tool built on the iHRIS software framework that helps the leaders of educational institutions track their graduates to assess the effectiveness of strategies to retain graduates at posts in underserved areas as well as the adequacy of training for them to work in such areas. The software maintains interoperability with the open source iHRIS software systems used by professional councils and ministries of health.
